“Do I actually need a new consumer unit, or is my old one still okay?”
The answer depends on several factors, but there are some clear warning signs that it’s time to consider an upgrade.
What Does a Consumer Unit Actually Do?
Your consumer unit is the heart of your home’s electrical installation.
It distributes electricity safely throughout your property while protecting every circuit from faults, overloads and electric shock.
Modern consumer units contain advanced safety devices that disconnect power almost instantly if they detect a dangerous fault, significantly reducing the risk of electric shock or electrical fires.
If your consumer unit is over 20 years old, it’s unlikely to offer the same level of protection as today’s installations.
1. You Still Have an Old Fuse Box
If your property still has rewireable fuses or an older style fuse box with removable fuse wire, it’s time to consider an upgrade.
These systems were perfectly acceptable when installed but lack many of the safety features that are now considered standard.
Modern consumer units provide:

2. Your Electrics Keep Tripping
Does your electricity regularly trip when using certain appliances?

Even if the electrics appear to be working perfectly, an older consumer unit may not meet current standards.
A professional inspection allows you to understand:
